How to apply for home adaptation grants
What Can Be Funded
DFG can pay for:
- Access: Ramps, widened doorways, level access showers
- Mobility: Stairlifts, through-floor lifts
- Bathrooms: Accessible toilets, baths, showers
- Safety: Specialist heating, lighting
- Kitchen: Lowered worktops (if child does food prep)
Maximum: £30,000 (England), £25,000 (NI), £36,000 (Wales). Scotland has separate scheme via local councils.
Application Process
- Contact your local council's occupational therapy team
- OT assessment to determine what adaptations are needed
- Council approves adaptations in principle
- Get quotes from approved contractors
- Means test (often waived for disabled children)
- Grant approved and work begins
Process can take 6-12 months. Non-repayable but may affect future property sales if significant value added.
